A Lifelong Passion For Justice
From an early age, attorney Justin Summary had an interest in the law and a passion for justice. He loved reading and watching TV shows and movies that centered around criminal justice, and by the time it came time to graduate from high school, he knew that he wanted to find a way to enter into the legal profession.
He decided to attend Blackburn College, a smaller school located near his hometown so that he could study political science and begin to pave a path toward law school. After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in 2002, he began applying for law school and was quickly accepted into the Southern Illinois University School of Law in Carbondale, Illinois. He jumped at the chance to study law in his home state and begin his journey toward becoming an attorney.

A Start As A Public Defender
After three years of studying and hard work, attorney Summary received his Juris Doctorate degree in 2005. He decided to waste no time, and quickly passed the bar exam for the state of Missouri shortly after graduating from law school. Armed with his degree and a license to practice law, he decided to begin by working as a public defender. He knew that working at the public defender’s office would allow him to get the courtroom experience that he would need, and allow him to focus on an area of the law that he felt suited his interests the most — criminal defense.
Moving Into Private Practice
He would spend the next three years working as a public defender, learning the intricacies of the criminal justice system and picking up valuable experience defending individuals from a wide variety of criminal charges. After a few years of working as a public defender, he was recruited to be a partner at a small local firm, which he decided to accept.
This allowed attorney Summary to have a little more control over his caseload and provided him with some exposure to more serious criminal offenses, such as federal crimes and major drug charges. Shortly after his time as partner, he decided that he wanted to strike out on his own so that he could run his own firm and completely manage his own caseload.
